Lynne Bilston is a biomechanical engineer whose research focuses on how mechanical forces are involved in physiological and pathophysiological processes in the body. Her research encompasses injury biomechanics, neural, respiratory, and cerebrospinal fluid biomechanics and other soft tissue biomechanics. She develops novel imaging methods for making biomechanical measurements in vivo, as well as applying her basic research to develop new treatments for obstructive sleep apnoea and CSF flow disorders such as Chiari Malformation and syringomyelia. She has a long-standing interest in understanding the mechanisms of brain and spinal cord injury and injury to children, and developing and testing ways of preventing these injuries. She has led numerous studies of injury in road crashes, and her work has led to changes in legislation and mandatory safety standards. She is currently researching ways to provide safe transport for children with disability for whom standard child restraints and seat belt systems are inadequate.
