Biography

Dion Kagan is a Research Associate based in the School of Law, Society and Criminology in the Faculty of Law & Justice at UNSW. He is a researcher in the Health+Law Partnership, which works with national and state-based health and legal communities to improve access to justice and quality of life for people living with Hepatitis B and HIV in Australia.

Dion Kagan is a Research Associate based in the School of Law, Society and Criminology in the Faculty of Law & Justice at UNSW. He is a researcher in the Health+Law Partnership, which works with national and state-based health and legal communities to improve access to justice and quality of life for people living with Hepatitis B and HIV in Australia.

Dion has a diverse and multi-disciplinary background in humanities and social-sciences research, with a particular interest in the experience of people living with blood-borne viruses, including HIV and hepatitis. His research has included projects on HIV, hepatitis C, stigma and discrimination, community health, media, technology, gender, sexuality and lifestyle practices, and has included projects at La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the Victorian College of the Arts, Monash University, and in consultancy-based projects for government clients.

Dion came to UNSW from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS), La Trobe University where he was a member of the Gender, Law and Drugs (GLaD) research program doing socio-legal research on hepatitis C, stigma and discrimination in the era of curative treatment. Prior to that, he worked as a lecturer in Gender Studies, Cultural Studies and Critical Sexualities Studies at both La Trobe university and the University of Melbourne, where he completed a PhD in the School of Culture and Communication. Dion is also a professional writer and Institue of Professional Editors (IPED)-certified editor who has worked for academic and trade publishers.

Dion is the author of Positive Images: Gay Men and HIV/AIDS in the Culture of ‘Post-Crisis’.
