Biography
Dr Joe Ren is a Lecturer in Management Accounting at the School of Business, UNSW Canberra. He holds a PhD from Monash University and adopts a multidisciplinary approach bridging accounting, management, and societal issues.
Joe’s research focuses on three key areas:
(1) the role of management accounting and control in governance and decision-making;
(2) accountability, performance, and diversity in public institutions and sustainability; and

Joe’s research focuses on three key areas:
(1) the role of management accounting and control in governance and decision-making;
(2) accountability, performance, and diversity in public institutions and sustainability; and
(3) how accounting shapes labour relations, professional identities, and work.
Trained in both qualitative and quantitative methods, he draws on sociological and philosophical perspectives to examine how accounting operates across diverse organisational and cultural contexts.
His work has been published in leading journals and books, including the Academy of Management Learning & Education and Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal (both ABDC A*). He currently leads a project funded by the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZOG).
Joe also serves as Associate Editor of Chinese Management Studies (Emerald Publishing).
