LTCOL Cameron Porter supports University of New South Wales Canberra Space with multidisciplinary expertise in military space operations, strategy and technology.

Cameron joined the Australian Army in 2002 and has been an officer in the Royal Australian Corps of Signals since graduating from the Royal Military College – Duntroon in 2006. He has worked at the tactical, operational and strategic levels domestically and deployed overseas, throughout the Middle East. These experiences consolidated his interest in satellite communications and electronic warfare, which added purpose to Cameron’s pre-existing astrophilia. Originally qualifying as a mechanised crew commander in the 1st Brigade, Cameron’s passion for space power remains grounded in its criticality to the warfighter and Australian society.

More recently, Cameron has led capability development efforts in Space Electronic Warfare and Space Domain Awareness in the Land Capability Division of Army Headquarters and the Space & Cyber Capabilities Division of Joint Capabilities Group. These roles enabled his contribution to raising Space Command and help establish its governance functions while acting as the Director of Space Coordination and Engagement. Although not publicly accessible, he has provided extensive input into Defence space policy, doctrine, capability business cases and ministerial submissions.

Through his studies at the University of New South Wales, Cameron has earned an undergraduate degree in Politics and a postgraduate degree in Command, Control, Communications, Computing, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare. In 2024, he was recognised as an Associate Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and became a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Cameron is completing a Global Executive Master of Business Administration in Defence and Space at the University of South Australia, as a Defence scholar. This program, developed in response to the AUKUS Agreement to improve collaboration between the public and private sectors, is delivered in partnership with the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom and Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.

In 2023, Cameron founded the Astra Australis Dialogue—a private gathering of space professionals intended to remove barriers between the arts and the sciences. It has done so by facilitating ‘Track 1.5’ style discussions between eminent experts and members of more than a dozen space-minded institutions and associations. One such organisation is the Australasian Centre for Space Governance, which champions the agenda for responsible space governance and advocates for Australia’s interests in space. In 2025, Cameron was elected inaugural chair of the newly incorporated centre’s board.

Cameron is married and has three daughters. He is an avid runner, snow skier, and less recently, rower and rugby player. He remains a proud supporter of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals Rugby Union Football Club, having toured the United Kingdom with the Centenary of Armistice squad in 2018.
